Hilary Collins, Managing Director, Big Wave PR

Career summary: Before launching Big Wave PR, Hilary was an Associate Director of a top 150 PR agency, where she led a team overseeing PR campaigns for Greene King, BAA Stansted, Parador Properties and Kall Kwik. She has also managed pan-European campaigns within the fashion and interiors sectors and worked with BT on their sponsorship programmes.

Career high: Being interviewed live on BBC TV by Terry Wogan.

Career low: When I was a student I used to clean the loos!

Biggest inspiration: My mum and Ghandi. Ghandi was a great PR man. He understood the man and woman on the street donned his robes and transformed a nation.

Can’t live without: A cup of tea in the morning, Krispy Kreme doughnuts and of course, my beautiful daughter.

Out of hours: Surfing at Watergate Bay, Cornwall.

Favourite newspaper: I tend to get my news from a number of sources. I wake up to the Today programme, and drive to work listening to Radio 1. I scan all of the papers over a cup of coffee, but I don’t really have a favourite, but I do love bbc.co.uk online.

Favourite film: Moulin Rouge. Baz Lurhman is a genius.

Tips for success: A very successful businessman once told me to ‘bite off more than I could chew and keep chewing!’
